CHAPTER 1: The Beginning

It's never good news when your doorbell rings at four in the morning.

Anthony James Freeman stumbled blindly out of bed, rubbing gunk from his eyes. What in the hell was someone doing at his door at this ungodly hour?! The doorbell rang again. "Coming," Anthony croaked, although it came out more like "Gnnhuh," He pulled on a T-shirt and a pair of jeans and groggily opened his door.

The visitor wasn't a person. That much was sure. Its skin was pale, deathly pale, tinged with yellow, a sign of rot. The head was missing chunks of hair, the eyes were blank--no pupil, no iris, no nothing--and the mouth hung open, like a black hole just waiting to swallow him up. Spindly arms were raised, fingers twitching, waiting to grab something, ANYthing, and destroy it. Anthony was terrified.

The thing lurched forward.

Anthony had a fraction of a second to do one of two things. He could either run around screaming, causing a huge ruckus until the thing finally caught him, or he could do something else.

So he did something else.

He kicked out, the ball of his foot plowing straight into the gut of the thing-- he still hadn't figured out the gender of this monster. It flew back, trying not to fall. Anthony ran to his fireplace and grabbed a poker. He held it like a baseball bat, bracing himself for the inevitable.

The creature dove at him again. Anthony closed his eyes, gritted his teeth, and stabbed forward with the poker. It jammed at something, only for a second, then heard a piercing scream. Something warm and wet trickled down over his fingers. Anthony opened his eyes and just about screamed himself.

He had impaled the monster. Its face was mere inches away from his own, mouth frozen in a horrified, angry scream. Anthony could not bring himself to talk. He walked outside, carrying the poker like... well, like something had had something nasty on it. Gently, he laid the poker down in the bushes on the side of his house.
